چکیده

Enquiries about the content of the report should be directed to the above address. The Medical Services Advisory Committee is an independent committee which has been established to provide advice to the Commonwealth Minister for Health and Ageing (formerly the Commonwealth Minister for Health and Aged Care) on the strength of evidence available on new and existing medical technologies and procedures in terms of their safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness. This advice will help to inform Government decisions about which medical services should attract funding under Medicare. MSAC recommendations do not necessarily reflect the views of all individuals who participated in the MSAC evaluation. v Table 14 Variables and assumptions used by the modelled evaluation to determine patients with normal lipid levels.. Executive summary The procedure The Cholestech LDX ® is a small, portable analyser and test cassette system that uses reflectance photometry (the amount of light reflected from a solid surface) to measure the quantity of substances in blood. The Cholestech LDX can measure the level of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein associated cholesterol (HDL) and triglycerides (TG) in whole blood (capillary or venous), serum or plasma. The device can also calculate the TC/HDL ratio and derives estimates of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) associated cholesterol. Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) is a key element of a measure taken by the Commonwealth to strengthen the role of evidence in health financing decisions in Australia. MSAC advises the Minister for Health and Ageing (formerly the Minister for Health and Aged Care) on the evidence relating to the safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of new and existing medical technologies and procedures, and under what circumstances public funding should be supported. A rigorous assessment of the available evidence is thus the basis of decision-making when funding is sought under Medicare. For the Cholestech LDX, a search of the medical literature available on the device was undertaken and the evidence assessed and classified according to the NHMRC hierarchy of evidence. A modelled …

Design, implementation and results of the quality control program for the Australian government's point of care testing in general practice trial.

BACKGROUND From 2005 to 2007 the Australian Government funded a multicentre, clustered randomized controlled trial to determine the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, satisfaction and safety of point of care testing (PoCT) in general practice (GP). PoC tests measured (and devices used) in the trial were haemoglobin A1c and urine albumin:creatinine ratio (DCA 2000), lipids (Cholestech L...

Accuracy of three dry-chemistry methods for lipid profiling and risk factor classification.

The purpose of this project was to determine the accuracy in lipids measurement and risk factor classification using Reflotron, Cholestech, and Ektachem DT-60 dry-chemistry analyzers. Plasma and capillary venous blood from fasting subjects (n = 47) were analyzed for total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) using these analyzers and a CDC certified laborat...

Evaluation of seven Cholestech L.D.X analyzers for total cholesterol determinations.

We assessed the performance of seven Cholestech L.D.X lipid analyzers under tightly controlled laboratory conditions for accuracy and precision in accordance with analytical guidelines of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Venous heparinized whole blood (VB) and plasma (VP), venous serum (VS), and capillary fingerstick whole blood (FB) were collected from 18 individuals. Total c...

Low-intensity physical activity benefits blood lipids and lipoproteins in older adults living at home.

OBJECTIVE to examine the influence of low-intensity, habitual physical activity on blood lipids and lipoproteins and other cardiovascular risk factors in older adults living at home. DESIGN cross-sectional observational study. PARTICIPANTS a convenience sample of healthy, older adults (n = 155) who were mainly non-Hispanic, white (96.8%), female (65.2%) and on medications for cardiometaboli...

Higher blood pressure associated with higher cognition and functionality among centenarians in Australia.

BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to examine blood pressure (BP) and cholesterol levels among centenarians in Australia, and to compare the relationship between these biological parameters with cognitive and functional status. METHODS We performed BP (n = 142) and cholesterol (n = 67) measurements using the Omron automated sphygmomanometer (Omron Healthcare, Melbourne, Australia) and...
